In addition to travel restrictions already in place, in an attempt to cope with the coronavirus epidemy, the Hungarian Government ordered further restrictions affecting education and courts, opening time of shops, restaurants and cafés as well as the attendance of public events, effective from 16 March, 2020.

For an unknown period, kindergardens and child daycare services will be shut down, while public schools will provide remote education.

Between 3 PM and 6 AM only employees can be present at restaurants and cafés. Past 3 PM food and drink could be ordered only for delivery and customers can only be present while picking up delivery or for time of payment.

Similar rules apply to any shop except for grocery stores, drugstores, shops selling cleaning products, pharmacies, shops selling medical devices, petrol stations and tobacco stores. Only employees can be present between 3 PM and 6 AM.

The Hungarian government kindly asks any citizens above the age of 70 not to leave their homes. In case elderly citizens decide to remain at home and report this to the municipality, the local government shall take care of their supply.

From 16 March 2020 it is forbidden to attend any musical and dancing events, regardless the number of participants. Only religious events, funerals and civil marriages can be held. Sports events may be held only without spectators.

All entertainment performances are forbidden – despite the number of people participating. Visiting cinemas, museums or public libraries is also forbidden.

It is important to know that violating any of the above rules may lead to fines up to 500,000 HUF.
